New Year, New Opportunities to Learn

Emily TippingWhen I was young, still in single-digit years, I thought the adults had all the answers. They were grown up, and having finished school, had learned everything they needed to learn. They were “finished,” in a sense.

Of course, as you get older, you realize that no one is ever finished with learning. Sure, some folks might choose to avoid learning anything new, but for those who love to learn, life is rife with lessons. All you have to do is choose where to direct your attention and how to fill up your time.

For those of us lucky enough to have jobs we truly enjoy (and our annual Industry Report data says that most of you are at least satisfied, if not very satisfied, in your work), it can be easy to get complacent. But even if you’re really good at what you do, and find enjoyment in completing each task well, there’s always room for more learning.

It’s a few days before Christmas as I write this, and not quite 6 a.m., and I’ve just been journaling about the work-related things I’d like to learn this year. Oh sure, there are always the “goals” … maintain an “above the fold” inbox, make sure you’re getting your to-dos done, etc. But I’d also like to hone some of my other, less-used skills.

Part of that will also provide a new learning opportunity for you, as a professional working in this industry. We’ve been hosting educational webinars for 10 years, and our State of the Industry Report will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. What better way to celebrate than to bring the two together?

To that end, we’ll be uniting these two projects, and I’ll be stepping up my involvement (a learning opportunity for me) and covering some of our research in the webinar format.

And so, I’d like to invite you to join us on Feb. 5 for our first webinar of the year, which will cover the Aquatic Trends Report data you’ll find in this issue. We’ll be bringing in a couple of industry experts to help you understand how you can use this data in your own aquatic facilities. And of course, we’ll continue to offer other educational opportunities—from expert-led webinars to in-depth content and beyond—all year long.

I hope to see you there, and in the meantime,

Happy New Year!
