If you add all of the Industry Report survey results from 2010 to 2026 together, an average of 15% of respondents planning to make
additions at their facilities said they would be adding trails. Walking and hiking trails have consistently been among the top 10 planned additions at facilities since 2010.
In the most recent survey, for 2026, slightly fewer—13.1%—of respondents with plans for additions said they would be adding walking and biking trails at their facilities. This is up slightly from 2025, when 10.1% of respondents had such plans. The all-time high was reported in 2010, when 20.8% of respondents with plans to add amenities at their facilities said they would add walking and hiking trails.
In 2026, plans for adding trails are most common for respondents from parks, who made up 76.7% of the respondents planning to add walking and hiking trails. They were followed by respondents from Ys (9.3%), colleges (4.7%), health clubs (2.3%), camps (2.3%) and rec centers (2.3%).
