Protect Guests From Unnecessary Risk in Aquatics

NSF/ANSI Standard 50 outlines performance requirements of safety surfaces installed around interactive water play venues such as splash play areas. Adherence to this standard may result in a decrease of aquatics-related lawsuits and lower incidence rates for injuries.

Q: Why does the standard matter?

A: Scrapes, cuts and concussions shouldn't be common occurrences on splash pads and pool decks, especially when young children could be getting their initial introductions to aquatic free play. The standard addresses several safety concerns associated with aquatic play areas.

NSF/ANSI Standard 50 covers six performance testing criteria of safety surfaces: slip-resistance, impact cushioning, impermeability, cleanability, chemical resistance, and UV resistance. The standard helps ensure that aquatic safety surfaces perform as expected and provide a safer environment.

Q: The standard isn't mandatory. Why should I be interested in following its recommendations?

A: Upgrading your facility periodically provides added benefits for your guests and may encourage them to visit your facility more often than competitors. Benefits of surfacing with a product that meets the standard include:

>> Superior safety: Slip resistance and impact cushioning provide increased traction and may decrease slip-and-fall incidents. When slips do happen, cushioning helps avoid critical injuries.

>> Durability: Products are guaranteed to last beyond the first season with UV and chemical resistance.

>> Reliable cleanability: Products see a 99.9% decrease of bacteria upon cleaning and are at least 97.4% impermeable.

>> Reduced liability: Following NSF/ANSI Standard 50 at your facility shows you are actively trying to prevent injuries and make your facility as safe as possible for guests.

>> Increased play value: Added safety benefits increase the ability for guests to fully enjoy the aquatic facility.
