NPCAI’s Recreation Installation Specialist Certification Program Aligns with ASTM Standard Guide F3699-24

The National Playground Contractors Association Inc. (NPCAI) announced that its Recreation Installation Specialist Certification (RISC) program fully aligns with the newly released ASTM Standard Guide F3699. Further enhancing the program’s credibility, NPCAI’s certification program meets the latest industry standard guidelines and ensures that certified recreation installers have the most up-to-date knowledge and skills expected in the field.

The ASTM Standard Guide F3699 provides guidance to individuals, organizations, and manufacturers involved in training and certifying recreation area installers. It outlines the key bodies of knowledge required for recreation area installers and mandates that candidates pass an examination based on best practices, ensuring they possess the necessary technical competencies for safety and high-quality installations.

The RISC curriculum provides comprehensive training to ensure recreation installation professionals have the knowledge and confidence to perform their work to the highest standards. The course, which is offered virtually over the span of two days (four hours each), gives participants an understanding of legal requirements, safety protocols, proper installation practices, and quality control, while also learning about personnel conduct, pre-construction planning, and coordination with other industry professionals. The program also introduces key organizations and government agencies that influence industry standards and compliance, helping installers operate with professionalism and credibility.

"Our mission is to elevate the profession and ensure that every certified installer has the most up-to-date training and knowledge," said NPCAI Executive Director Denise Calabrese, CAE. "The RISC certification not only prepares installers for the demands of the industry, but also reflects our ongoing dedication to safety, quality, and the future of recreation installation.

"Schools, parks, cities, municipalities, and any entity responsible for playgrounds need to be concerned about the contractors who are installing playgrounds. If you are building or maintaining a playground, make sure the installer is certified,” said Calabrese, who pointed out that all RISC certificants have a certificate and are listed on the NPCAI website at www.playground-contractors.org.

In addition to aligning with the ASTM Standard Guide, NPCAI’s RISC certification program adheres to standards set by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), making it one of the most respected certifications in the recreation installation industry.

NPCAI’s RISC program is offered virtually over the span of two days (four hours each) with the exam taken at the installer’s convenience.  It covers essential knowledge and requires successful completion of a test and a background check. The program and test are available in English and Spanish.
