Back in the Swing of Things

Emily TippingWe get up earlier than early around here. And by “we,” I mean me and the very small dog. And so we noticed when the school buses were back last Friday. Now that I don’t have any kids in school, it would have been easy not to notice the first day, but we were already out for a walk, and the very small dog is not fond of school buses. Or big trucks. Or Jeeps. Or people wearing things on their heads. Or anything out of the ordinary. (I had to pick her up and carry her past the paper wasp nest that had fallen on the ground. If I hadn’t, we’d likely still be out there, with me tugging gently on the leash every once in a while, as she contemplates the universe contained in a paper wasp nest).

Anyway, I was glad to notice, because I like the feeling of beginning-of-school time, even now that I’m not in school, and I no longer have a child in school. Maybe we carry over that sense of possibility from our childhood—that sense that we can achieve some kind of greatness, whether it’s straight As, a spot on the football team, a role in the musical or just making some new friends.

There’s something in the air this time of year that just feels like getting back into the swing of things. Routines and healthy habits, hobbies and big goals we might have set aside during “summer vacation” are picked back up, polished off and set in motion again. And who knows what we might achieve once we get those balls rolling again?

Of course, for many of you, the end of summer offers a different sense entirely—one of respite after the busy, busy days of summer programming, and keeping swimming pools, playgrounds and other outdoor amenities in tiptop shape.

Whichever way your September leads—toward rest and relaxation after a hectic summer or toward renewed motivation and excitement for the possibilities of fall—I hope you find pleasure, joy, and the awareness to see and freedom to seize any opportunity to make something or do something a little better than before.

Cheers!
